 Wynberg

Wynberg (literally translated to Wine Mountain) is in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, between Kenilworth and Plumstead.

It is a suburb with some of the most historically significant buildings in South Africa- buildings like the campus of Wynberg Boys High School which was established in 1841 and is the second oldest school in South Africa, the Sonnebloem estate which was built around 1800, the Royal Cape Golf Club, the oldest golf club in South Africa, and the Dutch Reform Church which is one of the oldest churches in South Africa. Wynberg is also home to the small claims court, and Wynberg Gardens, a popular wedding venue.

The area was established as a wine farm in 1683 to supply ships docking at False Bay, and was later used by British settlers as a garrison/military base.  Today, there is a major military school situated in Wynberg.

There are many heritage sites in Wynberg so be sure to visit to learn more about the historical significance of this important suburb of Cape Town.
