St.George’s was founded by Bishop Robert Gray on 11th of April in 1848. It was located in St. George's Church at the top of Adderly Street in Cape Town.  St.George’s was always a church school, and it was there for 50 years until it was demolished to make way for the new St.George’s Cathedral. In 1904, a new school building was opened, and in 1950 an additional wing was attached. In 1936, the school purchased a piece of farmland, known as  the Bloemendal Estate in Mowbray. For the first time, St.George’s had its own school buildings and playing fields. In 1956, the pre-primary moved from Town to the Bloemendal campus.  Before then, the new campus was only for the senior school, the boarding houses, and playing fields.

Historically, St.George’s has always been a small school and it became a racially integrated school in the 1970's. Today at 165 years old, St.George’s is the oldest independent school in the country.  St. George's is now a co-ed school, and it has continually been achieving top Matric results.
