Stella Papanicolaou runs the third year Design and Theory Studio course in the Bachelor of Architectural Studies (BAS) degree programme. She has taught design at the School of Architecture planning and Geomatics since 2001.

She has worked in practice for Gabriel Fagan Architects (1984), Munnik Visser Architects on projects with Roelof Uytenbogaardt and Julian Elliott (1997-99), at dhk Architects (2001-02), has worked in collaboration with Indigo Architects (2000 & 2005) and ran her own practice (2000-06) prior to taking on a full time academic post at UCT in 2008.

After obtaining the B.A.S degree at U.C.T. and before completing the B.Arch degree, Stella went to Venice where she stayed from 1985 to 1993. There she attended several diverse courses at the University of Architecture in Venice (IUAV) and worked as assistant director for the International Centre for Cities on Water, where, among other activities, became involved in the editing of a number of the Centre’s publications.

Her interests lie in architectural design; exploring meaning in the production of space with a focus on the role of architecture on the public realm; and she aims to develop tools for critical thinking to enhance the creative process in the studio.

Simone Le Grange, lecturer

School of Architecture, Planning & Geomatics

University of Cape Town

Simone le Grange graduated from the School of Architecture at UCT in 1996 with Distinction. After working in practice for 5 years, she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in the US. She completed her Masters of Urban Design at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2004.

As a practicing Architect and Urban Designer her interests have always been in the making of buildings and spaces in poorer communities within the Western Cape. While in practice she has worked on schools, clinics and community centres, as well as more well known buildings such as the Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island. She has also been involved with Urban Design work, particularly related to the redevelopment of District Six.

She taught part-time at the then Peninsula Technikon, for two years (1998-2000). She has also taught part-time at UCT, teaching design in the 2nd year studio in 2005 and 2006. As a student at UC Berkeley, she worked as a research assistant to Professor Bosselmann, on a comprehensive study of the Urban Design of San Francisco. In February 2008, she joined UCT as a full-time Lecturer, in the position of Academic Development Lecturer for the School of Architecture.

Her research interests are two-fold. As a practicing Architect she is interested in the ongoing development of appropriate ways of building community and dignity within the Post-Apartheid city through the provision of well designed and cost effective public buildings and public spaces. As a teacher of Architecture, she is interested in the dilemma that is particular to South African students, who come from presently and previously disadvantaged backgrounds, and the opportunities for transformation within the School of Architecture that this presents.

As part of this process she runs the annual Schools Workshop to raise awareness of the disciplines of Architecture within poorer communities, and to recruit applicants who would otherwise not have applied. She also runs the Winter Studio every year, which provides opportunities for added growth and development for some students.

Simone currently teaches in the BAS programme.

Oude Molen Academy of Science & Technology

Tony Marshall has been Principal of Oude Molen Academy of Science and Technology since 2006. He has several academic and professional qualifications from Stellenbosch University and from the University of Cape Town, and he is currently working on one from the University of the Western Cape.  His subject specialisation is English, and he has acted as examiner and moderator for Taalbond, the English Olympiad, and English Home Language for the Western Cape Education Department for many years. An enthusiastic educationist, he has presented many teacher development seminars  for his teachers’ union, Naptosa, where he is currently the Western Cape Vice-Chairperson.  He is a board member of the Governing Body Foundation, and the Quaker Peace Centre. Indulging his love of reading, he is the librarian of the Quaker Cape Western Monthly Meeting.

Tony is married to a teacher, and they have two daughters who are teachers. He claims that the redeeming factor is the son in the family who is studying business science. Tony is an inveterate connector, taking great pleasure in creating opportunities for people to recognise each other for the contribution they can make in other’s lives.  His booming laugh and gregarious nature brought Mr. Peter Goldstein to work with the Oude Molen Grade 11s in what he calls the "Skyline Project", and for this he is very grateful.  The project is an extension of the Civic Voices oral history initiative in which Tony is involved.  The South African chapter of the Civic Voices project (www.civicvoices.org) documents in a human rights memory bank, the experiences of anti-apartheid activists for use in schools internationally.  Tony’s gratitude to Peter extends also to Mrs. Michelle Goldstein who graciously shared her financial acumen with the girls and the SGB parents of Oude Molen.

This is me Beki Boneni, usually pronounced as Boneni Beki. I live in Cape Town the ‘Big Grape’ in the oldest township known as Langa. I have family in the Eastern Cape, Mthatha and KZN, Durban and I am looking to start my own family in Johannesburg. I am a traveler (and yet I don’t know where I am going) as well as a tourist, and yes I don’t know where I have been, I love jokes and I usually do not wait for a punch line because it might just not arrive and I may miss the moment of happiness. I love sports, including extreme sports. I am also fearless- meaning I have no fear factor, and I am a man of few words hence I am ending this bio after this fullstop.
